Things to Look for on School Tour

Touring a Waldorf school is an enchanting experience for prospective parents. There is so much new to see! You can print this list and take it on the school tour so you don't miss anything. Here are some things to look for when you tour your Waldorf school:

• Color was very important to Rudolf Steiner. Colors on the walls of Waldorf classrooms are chosen specific reasons. For example, peach blossom walls represent the color of human skin. You can also print this chart of room colors from the early Waldorf schools, and bring it with you to compare it with the colors of the classrooms at your school:

• The absence of black crayons in younger grades
• The absence of pencils in younger grades
• Main lesson books with nearly identical drawings and text by each student
• Faceless dolls. Sometimes collections are all "white," sometimes they have more diverse ethnic representation
• Nature tables, which look like altars
• Beeswax candles used to celebrate "the Light"
• Posters of Madonna and child
• Pictures of angels
• Galleries of "wet-on-wet" paintings that all look alike
• Drawings of the sun on chalkboards ()
• An absence of American flags (or, other national flags)
• An absence of classic children's literature
